A clearer choice

Three thicknesses.
Start with the specification.

The right gypsum board is part of a complete system. Use this overview to narrow your options, then check the product and installation requirements for your project.

Swipe the table to compare all the details.

Board thicknessWhere to startWhat to confirm
7mmGypsum ceiling boardCeiling lining where the selected ceiling system permits this thickness. The exact manufacturer, actual board thickness, support arrangement, sheet size and specified finish.
9.5mmGypsum ceiling boardA ceiling board option to compare against your drawings and selected construction. The board product, framing and fixing requirements, edge profile and jointed or skimmed finish.
12.5mmGypsum boardCeilings and drywall partitions where the specified system calls for this board.Ceiling or wall application, board grade, number of layers and any required system performance.

Thickness is one part of the decision. These regular board options should not be assumed to replace a specified moisture-resistant or fire-resistant product. Confirm the complete construction, including framing, fixings and finishing materials.

Plan the quantity

Measure the surface.
Then plan the sheets.

A useful materials enquiry starts with the area to be lined and the dimensions of the boards you intend to buy. Sheet coverage gives a starting quantity; the layout tells you how those sheets will actually fit.

For a ceiling, measure each area being boarded and include bulkheads or vertical drops if they are part of the work. For a partition, measure the wall faces and count every specified layer. A double-sided wall needs more lining than one face alone.

Coverage example

3.0m × 1.2m = 3.6m²

If the confirmed sheet is 3000 × 1200mm, each sheet covers 3.6m² before cuts and waste. A simple 36m² surface would need 10 sheets by area alone.

This is an example size, not a stock-size promise. Allow for the actual layout and confirm the supplied dimensions before ordering.

  1. Measure what will be lined

Record the dimensions of each ceiling area or wall face. Include returns, drops and extra layers, and note openings for a more useful layout review.

  2. Confirm the exact sheet

Check length, width, thickness, brand and edge profile on the quotation. Similar board names do not guarantee identical sheet sizes or finishing requirements.

  3. Review cuts and waste

Divide the lining area by the confirmed sheet area, round up to whole sheets and review board direction, joints and offcuts. Avoid treating one waste percentage as right for every room.

  4. Build a complete materials list

Include the system’s framing, fixings, jointing products and any insulation or perimeter details. Send drawings or measurements if you want these items considered with the boards.

Know the name on the board

Gypsum is the material.
RhinoBoard is a brand.

Gypsum boards are also commonly called plasterboards. RhinoBoard is Gyproc’s brand, while the current products in this category are listed under BEAM. The names should not be used as if they identify the same manufacturer.

If your drawings name RhinoBoard, BEAM Gboard or another specific product, include that detail in your enquiry. Confirm the manufacturer and exact board on the quotation before approving any substitution.

From selection to site

A better board order
starts with the details.

Share the practical details early so your gypsum board quote can cover the materials and arrangements your project actually needs.

Match the whole system.

Boards work together with their supporting structure and finishing materials. Ask for the accessories required by your chosen construction.

  • Board brand, thickness and grade
  • Confirmed sheet size and edge profile
  • Number of sheets or a measured layout
  • Required accessories and timing

Plan for arrival.

Include your Cape Town delivery location and access details. Confirm the delivery or collection arrangement before placing the order.

Gypsum boards,

Questions about thickness, quantities or the right product for a specification? Start here, or send us your project details.

Which gypsum board thickness should I choose?

Start with the specified ceiling or partition system. The 7mm and 9.5mm products in this category are ceiling board options; the 12.5mm product can be considered for specified ceiling and drywall applications. Thickness alone does not establish the correct support spacing, fixing method or performance. Send the specification if you need help identifying the board to quote.

What is the difference between 7mm and 9.5mm gypsum ceiling boards?

They are different board thicknesses and should be matched to the intended ceiling construction. Do not treat one as an automatic substitute for the other. Check the selected manufacturer’s installation requirements, actual sheet dimensions, edge profile and proposed finish before ordering. The product pages provide more detail for comparing your options.

Can 12.5mm gypsum board be used for drywall partitions?

Yes, where the specified partition system calls for that board. The complete wall specification also covers framing, the number of layers on each face, fixings, joint treatment and any insulation. For quantities, count all the faces and layers being lined, rather than using the floor area of the room.

Are the gypsum boards in this category RhinoBoard?

The current products are listed under the BEAM brand. RhinoBoard is Gyproc’s gypsum plasterboard brand. If your project specifically requires RhinoBoard, include that name and the required product in your enquiry so the quotation identifies the correct manufacturer. A generic description such as “gypsum board” should not be treated as confirmation of a particular brand.

How much do gypsum boards cost?

See the product listings above for the current displayed prices and VAT information. Open a product to check its details, then request a quote for the required quantity. Exact sheet dimensions, availability, accessories and any delivery charges should be clear in the final quotation. Compare matching products and sizes when comparing prices.

What size are the gypsum board sheets?

Check the dimensions of the exact product being quoted. A 3000 × 1200mm sheet covers 3.6m² before cuts and waste, but that is a calculation example, not a promise that every thickness is supplied in that size. Confirm length, width, thickness and edge profile before using any coverage figure to place an order.

How many boards will I need?

Measure the area to be lined and divide it by the confirmed area of one sheet. Round up to whole sheets, then review the layout, cuts and waste. For partitions, include each lined face and every specified layer. Room shape, sheet direction and openings can change the practical quantity, so a basic area calculation is only the starting point.

Are regular gypsum boards suitable for wet areas or fire-rated walls?

Regular board should not be assumed to meet a specialist moisture or fire specification. Ask for the board and complete construction required for that application. A thicker regular board is not automatically a moisture-resistant or fire-rated replacement. Share the required system or performance specification with your enquiry.

Can I request delivery in Cape Town?

Include your delivery suburb, postcode, site access details and preferred timing in the quote request. Delivery availability, handling arrangements, lead time and charges can then be confirmed for the order. If you would prefer to collect, ask for collection arrangements before travelling.

Do you also install gypsum ceilings and drywall?

Yes. Cape Ceilings & Drywalling provides ceiling and drywall installation services. For materials, use the products above. For a fitted ceiling or partition, visit our ceiling installers page or drywall partitioning page and send your project details for a separate installation quote.
